Information collected by the Approved Doctor will be held securely by the MCA as your seafarers electronic health record. This will only be visible to the MCA Chief Medical Advisor and to subsequent Approved Doctors. More information about how this information is used is visible at www.gov.uk/mca
The examination and assessment is carried out in accordance with statutory medical standards set by the Secretary of State and overseen by the MCA.
The AD will take your medical history and examine you. This will take around 30 minutes.
A hearing test may be needed. Please avoid loud noises and noisy environments for 48hrs prior to your appointment to maximise your performance.
The examination will be thorough but there will not routinely be any intimate examination. It is usual for you to be partially undressed down to underwear. You will be offered a chaperone.
Further information may be needed if your case is complex from your GP or specialist.
If you are Obese (BMI over 35) an additional fitness test (Chester step test) may be required to determine your physical capabilities. If possible this will be carried out at the time, but another appointment may need to be scheduled. This will incur an additional fee. There will probably be time limits and weight loss targets on your certificate.
ENG1 and ML5 examinations sometimes need to be combined with a OGUK, a drug screen or a chester step test as per the requirements of the employer. Discounts are given for combinations.
